There were 66 maps entered in this year's salon, tying for the all-time record with the 1981 ICS in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Due to the international flavor of this year’s salon competition, the usual Apprentice, Experienced, and Expert categories were suspended in favor of cave length categories. Awards were also changed to reflect ICS preferences, from our regular Merit and Honorable Mention to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. We had 14 maps in the 500m and under category (<1640 feet), 6 maps in the 500–1000m category (1640–3281 feet), 19 maps in the 1000–5000m category (3281–16,404 feet), 9 maps in the 5000–10,000m category (16,404–32,808 feet), and 10 maps in the 10,000m and over category (32,808+ feet). There were also 4 maps entered in a special Map Atlas category, and another 4 entered as “Display Only.” There were maps from Belize, China, Cuba, France, Gabon, Guatemala, Lao Peoples Democratic Republic, Mexico, Romania, Spain, and the United States (12 states: Alabama, Alaska, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Kentucky, Montana, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia). There were 33 cartographers represented, 3 more than the 1981 ICS. This year, we also instituted a People’s Choice voting for the first time.
